So What Are You Guys Going To Do?
Posted by: AuntJean [July 28, 2006 6:16 PM] Rege and Barb Malady have decided to close the Celtic Trader at the end of July. Last night (July 27th) we had "The Last Jam", an Irish Wake of epic proportions.
Over and over again, folks asked us, "Are you staying?"
Well, yeah, we are. We've signed a new lease for one year to give us a chance to see if we can afford the place all on our own. The landlord is being very co-operative with us: he wants us to stay.
It's going to be weird not having Rege and Barb around all the time. Okay, weird is too soft a word, it's going to be f'ing awful. But closing the store is what they need to do right now, just like moving into the Pressley space was the right thing to do thirteen years ago.
This wasn't just a store, after all. Rege was the midwife to a generation of musicians here in Charlotte, and losing that hurts all of us more than just losing a source for CD's. You could tell that it was the community that folks were mourning last night.
We've been talking with some folks about taking up some of the soon to be empty (in more ways than one) space, but we're in the middle of the Swannanoa Gathering right now. So that's going to be an August job.
In the mean time, raise a dram to the tall guy and wish him well.
